1. Import Tax Revision:
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced in Parliament that the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) tax threshold will be increased from Rs. 1 million to Rs. 1.5 million and current tax rates will be reduced as per an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
2. Permission for Vehicle Imports:
The President stated that imports of private vehicles will be allowed starting February 1, 2024, under a structured plan.
3. Fertilizer Subsidy:
The President assured Parliament that urgent measures will be taken to provide fertilizer subsidies without delays.
4. Air Quality Decline:
The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) reported that air quality levels in several areas have dropped significantly. In particular, the air quality in Jaffna is at an unhealthy level.
5. Grade 5 Scholarship Exam Issue:
The Supreme Court has ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to present a detailed report on its investigation into allegations that three questions from the Grade 5 Scholarship exam’s first paper were leaked beforehand.
6. Gunfire Incident in Panagoda:
Early this morning, two individuals on a motorbike fired shots at a house in Ranaviru Village, Panagoda, using a pistol. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
